William Furry, Executive Director of the Illinois State Historical Society, has agreed to serve as the speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Coles County Historical Society, Sunday, January 18, 1:30 pm, at the Dudley House in Charleston, Illinois.

He has served as Executive Director of the ISHS since July 2004, and was assistant director from 2001-2004. The private non-profit organization exists to encourage research and writing on subjects related to Illinois history, and to foster awareness and preservation of Illinois history. It administers the state historic marker program. Mr. Furry has also edited Illinois Heritage, the ISHS’s popular history magazine, since 2001.
Mr. Furry will share a program that he delivered while serving as an Illinois Road Scholar, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council, “The Fall of the Sparrows: Rev. Francis Springer and his Boatload of Orphans.” Springer was a Sangamon County man who served in the Civil War and went on to do remarkable things. Furry’s illustrated presentation will include information about the research trail that he followed, as well as the significance of what he found.
